From Slavonice the trail ascends toward the medial castle of Landstejn. This is a gradual, very pleasant and scenic ride with wonderful views of the Southern Bohemian landscape. The closer to Landstejn the deeper the forest, and at last the castle towers ahead. Landštejn is one of the best examples of medieval fortification systems. First built in the early 13th century as Romanesque castle, it was in the 14th century rebuilt in the Gothic defense system style, to which yet another hundred some years later were added a Renaissance palace and finally Baroque artillery bastions. It’s considered as one of the oldest and the best preserved medieval fortification structures in Europe. From Landstejn the route continues through deep woods downhill all the way to Nova Bystrice, another picturesque medial town. Past Nova Bystrice one can deviate from the direct Vienna – Prague Greenway and detour through its southernmost branch that can take you to the very bottom of South Bohemia, to Rozumberk na Vltavou as well as to Cesky Krumlov, connecting thus to another Greenway, the Prague – Salzburg route.
